Renovation and Development – Returning to Life

– Before the work starts – this shows how the building had deteriorated over time.  While the roof was lost, thankfully the demolishment of the Jail stopped. However, over the years, the building took a beating from the weather with the internals exposed to the rain and debris built up.

– Work Commences – Scaffolding Up.  The new attraction centre is being built concurrently with the hotel.  Scaffolding allows the construction teams to really assess the damage from the weather and how to commence the build.  It also replaces the lost floors within each wing and gives a sense of scale. Many architectural features will be retained.

– Work Continues – Removing debris from over the years is a significant undertaking.  These images show how much accumulated as you can see from the “tide marks” from the walls externally and internally where demolition crews had started work and thrown rubble into the cells.

– Work Inside on Cells – Three cells will be made into one bedroom.  When the Jail opened, the cells were all for sole occupancy and had facilities.  While our finished rooms will be modern and luxurious, we will still retain the natural stone walls in places.  We don’t want to lose that heritage.

– Roofing – An important milestone for the refurbishment.  Getting the roof on will finally allow us to see this building start to dry out after over a decade without a roof.  There is still much to do.

– Next Steps – Our sample rooms will be ready during February and we are looking forward to this important step.  We will finally get to stand within a bedroom and get a sense of the space and quality of the finished product. We will make tweaks, but we looking forward to sharing the next round of images.
